Chapter 1

1

Designah, King in Jeusabilitem, says so: “Useless! Useless! Utterly useless! Everything is useless.”

2

What do designers gain from all their labors at which they toil around users? Problems come and go, but users remain.

4

The problem blows to the stakeholder and turns to the designer; round and round it goes, ever returning on its due.

5

All designs turn into the experience, yet the experience is never full. To the place the empathy comes from, there it reprises again.

6

All experiences are wearisome, more than user can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.

7

What has been will be again, what has been designed will be designed again; there is nothing new under the hood.

8

Is there any design one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was designed already, long ago, before our time.

9

No one remembers the outdated designs, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.

10

I, Designah, is king over Userael in Jeusabilitem. I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is designed under the heavens.

11

I have seen all the things that are designed for the users; all of them are useless, a chasing after the clients.

12

What is experienced cannot be designed; what is lacking cannot be counted.

13

I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has designed in Jeusabilitem before.”

14

Then I applied myself to the understanding of design, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the user.

15

For with much design comes much experience; the more empathy, the more use.
